Platform: Smart Growth with Responsible Financial Stewardship
Fiscal responsibility and transparency are paramount
- A Budget Review Committee should be re-established to ask legitimate questions and provide advice on best fiscal practices. This committee should not serve to stop all progress and spending, but help to optimize our solutions.
- A safe city is a prosperous city which requires the optimum level of police and fire personnel and equipment to anticipate the needs within a 5-year time horizon.
- Solutions for service cost sharing should be considered although geographically limited.
Resident Quality of Life Issues should be considered in concert with development or land use changes
- We need better balance to continue practical growth of this city. Residents need to feel they have a better say in the features that may directly impact them without stopping all new projects. Resident Committees must be re-established with clear roles and guidelines.
- Large area flooding during typical rainy season must be addressed for the areas of constant flooding during heavy rainstorms.
UEP must continue on schedule with a close review of better financing options
- Including Grants and funding from State and Federal level (EPA).
- Priority must continue to be given to the residents in the Mid-Hawthorne Aquifer areas of the NW/NE section of the city.
Waterways must become a more prominent feature of this city
- Better Tourism opportunities.
- New Canal Access to the Gulf of America and development of waterfront entertainment venues (i.e. 7 Islands Development).
- Waterways must be considered basic infrastructure just the same as roadways. We have 400 miles of canals which require regular maintenance and development.
Commercial Rateables are of primary importance
- We must prioritize BURST (Burnt Store Road District-future land use amendment) and
similar zoning, where possible with low impact, high value rateables. - Continue to position Cape Coral in industries for jobs (i.e. technology, healthcare, light
industry) creating a magnet for working families. - Add a new hospital in NW/NE area of Cape Coral.
Infrastructure development is a necessary growth engine for our city
- Community development including expanded roadways, improved traffic safety and flow, the new Cape Coral Bridge to Ft Myers.
Avoid extraordinary projects that do not fit into the existing zoning of a neighborhood
- Avoid projects that will become a permanent stain on specific neighborhoods and Cape Coral’s reputation, as a whole (i.e. airports and garbage dumps).
- Redraw the Zoning and Land Use Map to create specific Commercial Sub-zones for particular businesses, to the best extent possible, away from single family homes. It’s time to re-look at this again.
Better animal ordinances must be established for the welfare and safety of our pets
- This includes lost, runaway and abused animals
- Create a microchip chip program that is accessible to those that can’t afford the extra expense
“It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.” – Joaquin Phoenix
